When your technology equipment gets old, what should you do with it?

What do you do with all your old equipment? It is sad to say good bye to dear friends but the day does come for all of us. With new technology continually being developed and new and improved versions being constantly released, the technology graveyard is getting bigger and bigger. What to do to manage it while being eco-friendly?

  1. Use device as back-up
    • Keep your older devices handy to connect to for emergencies, dead battery issues, etc.

  2. Sell it/trade it in
    • You won’t get rich, but every few dollars adds up. Be sure to wipe all your existing data on it by doing a factory reset and remove SIM cards

  3. Recycle
    • There are many local recycling centers that will be happy to accept your electronic devices. Earth911 is a good resource for finding one near you http://search.earth911.com/
    • Big box stores and manufacturers are also great resources to utilize
  4. Donate
    • Many local charities accept used equipment either for them to resell to consumers or to sell to recyclers
  5. Get creative
    • If you have a creative flare and like the retro designer look to your décor, or you have a knack for creating eclectic art with taking old pieces of various devices and creating something new.
